Problem of Alcoholism Riding a Tiger in Tamil Nadu

By Syed Ali Mujtaba

Alcoholism is becoming widespread problem in the Indian society and Tamil Nadu is no exception. The age of first exposure to alcohol in the state has dropped to 15 years. Added concern is the increasing numbers of women specially girls becoming addicted to alcohol. This trend is causing socio-economic problems but little is being done to arrest this social trend.

On the contrary, the state government is encouraging alcoholism to gain revenue. Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is a company owned by the Tamil Nadu government which has a monopoly over wholesale and retail vending of alcoholic beverages in the state.

The state government, for years has been adding a huge amount of money to its exchequer by licensing and selling the liquor through its 2500 government controlled TASMAC shops. Liquor sales in 2011-12 has touched 18,081.16 crore rupees, registering a 20.82% increase. Every year during the New Year and Pongal festival, TASMAC is making around Rs. 500 crores selling liquor in wholesale and retail market.

‘Whether GDP rate grows or not, the alcohol consumption rate has been growing at 8 per cent every year, says Lakshmi Vijaykumar, head of the department of psychiatry at the Voluntary Health Services, Taramani, Chennai.

‘No government is willing to stop it because they get revenue from it, but the costs are higher’ she says adding, ‘dealing with problems caused by alcoholism costs three times more than the amount of revenue the government gets from liquor sales.’

In order to understand the magnitude of the problem and to feel the pulse of the society, Nandini Voice for the Deprived, a Chennai based NGO conducted a survey in Tamil Nadu to ascertain the views of the people about the TASMAC shops, believed to be the root cause of this social problem

This study was necessitated because in recent times, there have been number of agitation by group of people in several places in Tamil Nadu, demanding that TASMAC shops to be removed from the residential areas. There were also protests that the TASMAC shops should be barred near the places of worship and educational institutions. Judiciary have also given instructions that the highways should be free from the TASMAC shops. However, all this is having little impact on checking the sale of liquor in the state. The sales turnover of TASMAC shops are steadily increasing and proportionate to it the number of liquor addicts is growing among various age groups.

Methodology of study

The study was conducted to find out what the common man thinks about the proliferation of TASMAC shops in the state, given the fact that the government itself is managing such liquor shops.

The study was conducted on the basis of primary survey that was randomly spread all over the state. Around 243 men and women were interviewed both in rural and urban areas through questioner method. The respondents include; higher secondary and college students, youth, software professionals, senior citizens, domestic maids, etc.

Findings of the study

There were respondents who regularly take liquor did not feel guilty about their habit. They view consuming liquor nothing differently from taking other beverages. They cannot visualize their life without consuming liquor. To a question, in the event of government imposing prohibition, the respondents had no hesitation in saying they will opt for liquor from the black market. Some even justified the TASMAC shops as they were necessary to prevent illicit liquor trade.

The NGO ‘Nandini- Voice for the Deprived’ found that the liquor habit is fairly well spread throughout the state. However, its impact is clearly evident in the rural areas, where more than 40 % of the male population are addicted to consuming liquor regularly.

The study has also found that serving liquor has become a fashion in marriage parties and in funerals, particularly amongst lower income groups in Tamil Nadu. What was noticed that for sake of social status, even those who do not consume liquor, arrange liquor for others during such events.
It’s not uncommon site to find students stacking liquor bottles in their rooms at college hostels with the warden keeping a blind eye. Much to its surprise, the study has found out the students of higher secondary schools are getting addicted to liquor.

The study has also found that women from affluent families are also taking liquor, though occasionally. Some girls are also picking up this habit, especially those living in hostels.

Seeing women in the lower income group visiting TASMAC shops is not an uncommon site in Tamil Nadu, though their numbers remain microscopic.
Effect of liquor consumption on the society

With men increasingly becoming alcohol addicts, large numbers of poor families in Tamil Nadu are suffering economically and emotionally. Women getting beaten up by drunken husband and sometimes even by drunken sons and sons in law, desperate women hitting back the drunken men to protect themselves , children unable to concentrate in their studies in such disturbing conditions and sometimes women even committing suicide, unable to bear the torture, have become a regular feature of Tamil Nadu society.

As alcohol addicted men seem to lose values in life, the trend of promiscuity and Illicit relationships is growing, leading to breakdown of marriages. This phenomenon is common both in the lower as well as upper income groups, the study has found. What is even more disturbing is that while such matter is regularly reported in the media, they no more shock the people. Everyone seems to be reconciling to the fact that it is inevitable development of modern times.

In many poor families, the household is mainly run by the earnings of women. With the men folk frittering away the earnings in liquor and several of them not going to jobs regularly, due to poor health condition and indiscipline, life has really become hard for women in such households.

Mothers shoulder the responsibility and are seen pleading with NGOs and others for financial support for the education of the children, particularly due to the increasing realisation that imparting good education to the children, especially to their daughters, is the only way to protect their long term economic and social well being.

There was an overwhelming response from the non alcohol consuming people, particularly among the women in lower income group that the TASMAC shops have encouraged liquor consumption in a big way. They also blame political parties in power for many decades in the state in providing legitimacy and sanction to such social evil.

The respondents widely felt that the Tamil Nadu government alone can set the conditions right. The best way to do so is to gradually close the TASMAC shops and create a climate where liquor consumption is once again seen as a taboo. Such response mainly came from the poor women who are not informed about the revenue earned from liquor sales and have high hopes that government may educate the people of its ill effects.

However, well informed people responded that the government will not close the TASMAC shops as it is one of the main sources of its revenue. Without it several social measures and freebies offered by the government may be withdrawn. This may create social unrest and may lead to mass agitations and protests among the poor people. This may also have an effect on the vote banks particularly from lower income group, who are the recipients of the freebies. In such case, no government may like to face such conditions and think about clamping prohibition.

Speaking on this issue Mr. N.S.Venkataraman, founder of the NGO Nandini Voice for the Deprived, said that situation in Tamil Nadu has changed a lot from the fifties and sixties. There was a time particularly during the Chief Minister Kamaraj’s rule, when liquor consumption was seen as a social taboo. Liquor was taken in privacy and secrecy and families were unhappy about it. He cites the names of stalwarts like Kalki Krishnamurthy, Rajaji, Kamaraj and others who in 50s and 60s with their social campaign kept this problem under check.

Venkataraman, says the root cause of today’s condition is the passing of an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act, 1937, by the Tamil Nadu government in October 2003. This has led to increase in the habit of liquor consumption and this habit has spread amongst all age groups and all economic groups, he rues.

Similar efforts that were made in fifties and sixties to check this growing trend is required today, says the NGO founder, adding unfortunately, now we do not have any political leaders of such caliber, sagacity and wisdom who can initiate such anti liquor campaign. It appears that this habit has come to stay forever, he laments.

In such situation it’s only the people, particularly the women in the lower income group who are the worst hit and are desperately looking for relief should come forward and advocate prohibition in the state. They can democratically exercise their will in the forthcoming election and vote for the party that feels their sentiments, Venkataraman suggests.

However, the question remains, in a politically charged state like Tamil Nadu, which political party can convincingly assure people on this and which political party enjoy the credibility and has consistency in its stand on such issue, he asks?

He goes on; not everything is lost, the well informed people who think ahead of the time and feel concerned about the serious damage being done to the posterity due to rapid spread of alcoholism should come forward and rally behind this social cause. This alone can kindle a ray of hope in other wise depressing situation to control the growing trend of alcoholism in Tamil Nadu, Venkataraman, concludes.

'Narendra Modi government to be blamed for fake enounter'

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has always been the center of attention for various reasons. However, the new controversies that are emerging out of this state are unprecedented and carry political as well as judicial connotations. The recent arrests of police personnel in Gujarat for staging “fake encounters” comes as another grim reminder of the weakness of our political and other government entities. These incidents are not isolated and have been in the headlines for more than four years. Just recently a SIT member termed Isharat Jahan encounter as a fake one.

Many people blame the Narendra Modi government for these killings and strongly believe that Modi played a pivotal role in them. The Gujarat police have always been suspected of connivance with political entities that have religious and anti-Semitic features. These suspicions were further strengthened when the accused, a 19 year old student Ishrat Jahan, (and the other three suspects) who was killed in a fake encounter, was said to be kidnapped by the police according to the judicial probe by Judge SP Tamag.

Much hinges on the preliminary chargesheet filed by the CBI on the encounter killing of Ishrat Jahan and three others in June 2004, outside Ahmedabad. More than the incident itself, however, its political implications for the BJP and Congress have roiled public discussion. Partisan, even reckless, politics is thick in the air. Even as the CBI inquiry was on, the Congress suggested that the Gujarat government may stage such encounters to serve its chief minister's agenda.

The BJP has rushed to target the CBI, alleging that it has been manipulated by the ruling party against the Gujarat chief minister. The political acrimony is unsurprising, perhaps, given that the case involves Narendra Modi's state police, and with the countdown having begun for 2014. But it obscures long-term questions that are thrown up by the case, which deserve careful consideration in a more sober climate.

There is the question of whether or not Ishrat Jahan was a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist. The CBI's chargesheet is silent on this. But this question is not immediately relevant, since the court's mandate to the CBI was to investigate the circumstances of her killing, and because those accused of terror deserve due investigative and legal process as much as anyone else.

A question of long-term import raised by the CBI chargesheet concerns the mission and responsibility of intelligence agencies. This, after all, is the highly unusual situation of IB officers figuring in a CBI chargesheet. Though Rajendra Kumar is not accused in this document, there may yet be a supplementary chargesheet that goes further.

This could set an unsettling precedent for the national intelligence agency, which is accorded certain protections, to enable its highly sensitive work. If this understanding and practice is to change, then it must be done carefully and systematically, not in a manner that might invite suspicions of the pursuit of a short-term political agenda.

If it is deemed necessary, such a change must be envisioned and deliberated upon at the highest levels and the prime minister himself must oversee the transition.

Extra-judicial killings are an unacceptable phenomenon. They have occurred across states, and the police often get away with it, citing the heated situation, or the system's alleged incapacity to prosecute those believed to be criminals.

In staged encounters, the killing is deliberate, the proof of criminality planted later, and if Ishrat Jahan and others were indeed killed in a fake encounter, then all those responsible must be punished.

But both the cause of justice in this individual case, as well as the larger predicaments it frames, are ill-served by the fevered political atmosphere that surrounds it.

New Delhi: "It is matter of great distress and utmost concern that there is a move by the Government again to dilute reservation policy for OBC/ ST/SC. The 10-year-old matter regarding reservation in faculty post in All India Institute of Medical Sciences was taken up by Constitutional Bench of Hon. Supreme Court in a great haste, even though the Chief Justice of India is retiring on 18th July. The matter which has national importance, effecting the 80% population of this country and has very wide repercussions and ramifications was heard by the Supreme Court in the manner in which makes me very suspicious," said Sharad Yadav, MP and President of JD(U) in a press release.

"From the last few days, I am keeping a strict watch on this issue and it is very evident that the attitude of Government and AIIMS is against reservation and all efforts are made to lose this case, and ultimately Supreme Court gives judgment once again against reservation. Government is trying hard with the help of Court to stop reservation in all medical posts of AIIMS. The ultimate aim of the present Government is to stop reservations in all the faulty posts of medical, engineering , IIT, Centre and State Universities and many more areas. Recently the reservation in promotion was also stuck down by the Supreme Court and till now government is in no mood to pass an ordinance in favour of this," he said.

Sharad Yadav further stated, "I am aware of the recent development going in AIIMS and Ministry of Health. The Government and the AIIMS administration were trying their best not to give reservation in faculty posts. The direct post of the professor is the best example. From the last 2 years I am struggling, written letters to the Minister also, but the government was keeping silent. Indeed all measures were taken and tried not to give and even to stop existing reservation in faculty posts of AIIMS. When it became clear that they could not stop it politically and at the level of bureaucracy they have taken the path of court. The anti reservation attitude of our courts are well known."

Mr. Yadav has urged all the MPs/MLAs/politicians of all political parties and all the people belonging to OBC/SC/ST to stand united and come on streets against this anti-reservation move by the Government and Supreme Court.

Mr. Yadav has also welcomed the statement of Chief Justice that there should be reservation in the judiciary also.

There could not have been a more suitable person than Ms Nirmala Kurien, to inaugurate the ‘Dr V Kurien Academic Centre’ of Mansinhbhai Institute of Dairy & Food Technology (MIDFT), managed by DURDA, at Dudhsagar Dairy, Mehsana, on Sunday, 30th June, 2013. Two years ago, Dudhsagar Dairy had become the first Cooperative Dairy in the country to set up a Dairy & Food Technology Institute (MIDFT) without any outside grant or assistance. The Institute offers a 4-year B.Tech (Dairy Technology) programme. It is affiliated to Kamdhenu University, Gandhinagar. The Academic Centre has been set up for the benefit of the students and faculty of MIDFT.

Dr Kurien was an institution builder of international standards. One of his creations is the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA). It was set up in 1979 with a view to make available professional managers committed to rural development, and to meet the managerial requirements of dairy cooperatives in particular. Thanks to IRMA, the dairy cooperatives have no difficulty in finding professionally trained and committed managers for its ever expanding operations.

With the setting up of MIDFT, it will now become the prime source for trained Dairy Technologists for the dairy industry which is playing a vital national role in providing large scale rural employment, empowerment of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers engaged in cooperative dairying, besides making available to India’s large population high quality milk and milk products at reasonable prices, round the clock. “The inaugural function was presided over by Dudhsagar Dairy & GCMMF Chairman, Shri Vipul Chaudhary. Shri R S Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF was the Guest of Honour.”

In her speech, Ms Nirmala Kurien expressed her great sense of satisfaction and joy to see that the Academic Centre of MIDFT is named after her father, fondly called the Milkman of India. She thanked the Chairman and Board of Mehsana Union, MIDFT, and the cooperative dairy farmers of Mehsana Union for their kind gesture, and for inviting her to inaugurate the Centre.

Vipul Chaudhary recalled the great contributions that Dr Kurien had made for India’s dairy industry and to the development of Mehsana Union in particular. Even after stepping down from the Chairmanship of GCMMF in 2006, Dr Kurien had consented to be an Honorary Adviser to Mehsana Union which showed his love for the dairy farmers of Mehsana. Mr. Chaudhary said that he derives huge motivation and inspiration from the lifelong work of Dr Kurien which was hundred per cent committed to the welfare of cooperative dairy farmers.

Mr. Sodhi thanked the Chairman and Board of Directors of Mehsana Union and the Management of MIDFT for inviting him to be the Guest of Honour at a function that was giving respect and honour to the founder-chairman of GCMMF. He said that he was privileged to study in IRMA and work in GCMMF, both of which were the brain child of Dr Kurien.

Mr. PR Patel, Executive Director, In-charge of MIDFT recalled his association with Dr Kurien over a period of 20 years. He particularly mentioned about an incident when Mr Patel was with Sumul Dairy. In response to a veiled complaint that Dr Kurien was not coming for the Programming Committee meetings of GCMMF very often, he replied “Do you want me to take care of the Union Chairmen of GCMMF, or the Managing Directors also”? Dr Kurien was clear in his mind what his primary responsibilities were. He was a thorough professional, a man of highest integrity.

The function was attended by thousands of cooperative dairy farmers who had assembled at the dairy for their Annual General Meeting, besides the invited guests, media personnel and dairy employees. The dairy farmers were so happy that the Academic Centre has been named after the legendary Dr V Kurien who had done so much for the dairy development in Mehsana, the fruits of which the farmers are enjoying now. The function was a grand success.

Appeal to stop the telecast of serial "Jodha Akbar"

IMO News Service

Devika Mittal, a Social Activist associated with NGO Mission Bhartiyam, has filed a complaint with IBF (Indian Broadcasting Foundation) to stop the telecast of the serial "Jodha Akbar" being broadcasted on Zee TV on the grounds of communal and provocative content. The serial claims to project the love story of Badshah Akbar and Rajputana Jodha Bai. According to the producers, Akbar was a cruel King. He was a religious bigot and was brought to "sanity" by Rajput princess Jodha Bai. After protests by Rajput community and historians on the historical inauthenticity, the serial runs on a disclaimer that states that the serial does not have any historical backing.

Devika Mittal, in her appeal, has questioned the logic of running a "historical" show that self-recognises itself to be historically inauthentic. "Why is there a need to telecast such a serial? Why is there a need to use the names? Even if Jodha may not have ever existed, Akbar did. Where is the need to demonise him? It is shocking that this has been allowed in a communally-sensitive country. India is threatened with the forces of hindutva which claims the country to be the ancestral and "rightful" property of only Hindus, negating the claims of all other religious groups. It also demonises muslims and have used (or misinterpreted) history to serve their purpose," she remarked.

This serial reiterates these false sentiments. The appeal states that "this serial re-iterates the baseless stereotypes about "Muslim" rulers. Akbar is shown to be this demon. He is shown to be a "Muslim" ruler. It is historically incorrect to use terms like "secular", "conservative" or "liberal" for rulers as these terms are of recent origin but if I do commit the sin, just for this time, I will not be wrong to say that Akbar is popular for being "secular". He is known for Din-i-ilahi, for rejecting the teachings of the ulama, for rejecting conservative Islam and for rajput-mughal alliances. If we read the history, we will know that this happened for many reasons. But according to the serial, it was Jodha, a Rajput princess who forced him to become "good". Jodha had swore to some goddess that she will behead Akbar and throw the head on the feet of the goddess, bringing a very strong religious angle. It is also historically inauthentic. But a more important concern is the dangerous effect that it will entail. The serial re-iterates the notions about "Muslim" rulers who invaded, discriminated, dishonoured women and tried to destroy the "Hindu" culture.

She has appealed to stop the telecast on the grounds that it is historically inauthentic, demeaning and has the potential to revive communal tensions in the country.

Modi will preside over another Partition

By Sunanda K.Datta-Ray

An unshaven, weasel-faced young man stares soulfully from the feature pages of almost every newspaper I open. A plump, unshaven man grimaces and gesticulates from the screen almost every time I switch on the TV. The first, I am told, is an up and coming Bollywood actor paying through the nose for the package coverage offered by many major dailies. The second is the best Prime Minister India has yet to have, according to the team of advertising agents masquerading as journalists who were ceaselessly projecting Narendra Modi long before Sunday’s Goa anointing.

I can only admire the dexterity with which these publicists harp on the United Progressive Alliance’s undeniable sins of omission and commission to promote their employer as the only alternative. Thanks to them, I could listen to his passionate denunciation of the horrendous torching of the Sabarmati Express in which 58 people (including 25 women and 15 children) were burnt alive. The charred train still displayed at Godhra station is a mute reminder of the outrage. But they haven’t distributed any recording of Modi similarly condemning the ensuing bloodbath in which at least 800 Muslims were butchered. All that a BJP leader would say when the question of an apology came up in one of Sunday evening’s TV programmes was that the parliamentary board would consider it when the time came. Eleven years
have gone but the time hasn’t yet come!

The difference in Modi’s response to the two atrocities must be stressed not to criticise him but to draw attention to the reasons for his appeal even outside the saffron fold. If there is “a groundswell building up in his favour”, as Arun Jaitley says, it isn’t because there are no power cuts in Gujarat villages. In fact, L.K. Advani wasn’t the first to throw cold water on Modi’s boast of promoting economic growth. Human development statistics of matters like child education and nutrition had already belied the claim. But this didn’t matter to Kolkata’s elite Calcutta Club members who gave Modi a standing ovation. They were honouring the man who demanded a uniform civil code, meaning Muslims should lose the protection of their special personal laws.

It’s this national mood that causes concern. Attempts to bridge the educational and social gulf between Hindus and Muslims that the Sachar Committee exposed at once provoke resentment. Reports of a silent invasion from Bangladesh, Muslim refusal to accept the family planning campaign (when there was one), special rules regarding waqfs, suspected Middle East funding for the proliferation of mosques and separate personal laws feed Hindu nervousness about the demographic future. That might explain a multinational executive with a Muslim name — a Westernised young man with a foreign wife — finding it difficult, as he told me, to rent a flat even in enlightened Kolkata.

All this warns of the threat of another partition, this time of the spirit and not necessarily the body. As Nehru realised, majority communalism is a dangerous phenomenon. Just as Sartre saw France’s Jewish question as a gentile one, Nehru saw the Muslim question as a Hindu one. He knew that India can’t be governed without minority cooperation. So did Gandhi. The Mahatma didn’t espouse the Khilafat cause because he loved a remote, obscurantist, monarchical institution, but because Indian Muslims had to be kept happy.

The same political logic accounted for Advani’s visit to Pakistan in 2005 and probably Jaswant Singh’s book, Jinnah: India-Partition-Independence. I once asked the late Sikandar Bakht why he was in the BJP but Atal Behari Vajpayee shrewdly shut him up.

Big business feels Modi will provide more opportunities. The riff-raff of the Shri Ram Sena and Bajrang Dal who burn missionaries and raid parties and discos may hope for freedom under him to indulge in their criminal viciousness. But the BJP managers who keep harping on Modi being their “tallest” leader calculate he alone can increase the BJP vote beyond the 18.8 per cent gained in 2009. The economic achievements they trumpet provide a cover for the more compelling argument that he alone can guarantee the majority community’s security. That makes sense even to non-saffron voters.

That’s why Ania Loomba, who teaches English at Pennsylvania University, was among those who objected to the Wharton School inviting Modi for the India Economic Forum in March. “We were concerned that this conference would help contribute to his efforts to sanitise his government’s record”, she explained in an interview printed in the Kolkata weekly, Frontier. “Specifically, his government’s actions and inactions during the communal violence in Gujarat in 2002 which devastated the state’s Muslim population, and whose worst excesses have still not been redressed.”

The objection was to the Gujarat chief minister trying “to recast himself as a ‘developmentalist’ with a strong economic record”. Loomba’s scepticism was evident long before Advani compared Modi’s Gujarat to its detriment with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Every election campaign committee needs a chairman. Modi isn’t the first in the job. That doesn’t automatically make him the NDA’s prime ministerial choice or guarantee an NDA victory next year. But the media didn’t make such a hullabaloo over previous incumbents because the party didn’t treat them like men of destiny. Sensing the national mood, the party knows that the image of Modi the developer pales beside the glowing image of Modi the apostle of Hindutva. He didn’t create the mood but he rides it. The more he does so, the greater the danger of India being plunged one day in another holocaust such as Germany suffered. Publicity is oxygen for others besides terrorists.

Peace Foundation condemns the cowardly attack on Buddhist holy sites in Bodh Gaya

IMO News Service

Patna: Peace Foundation, a body of Muslim intellectual of Bihar, has condemned the terror attack on the Buddhist holy sites in Gaya on July 7, 2013 morning.

Peace Foundation General Secretary, Naushad Ansari, described the brutal and cowardly terror attack on Buddhist holy site of Bodh Gaya as strongly condemnable. The gruesome incident is most inhuman and highly provocative. These attacks cannot be justified under any pretext and violates all norms of decency and morality and are, indeed, a matter of grave concern, no matter what the religion, community or social class of those engaged in it. Terrorism is also a total antithesis of religious teachings. All the religion propagates mercy and peace. Hence, any terrorist activity contradicts the basis concept of all the religions, he stated.

Mr. Ansari said that, in particular, Islam has advised mercy for all. The Holy Quran lays down that the enmity of any community should not cause the believers stray from the path of justice and peace. The Prophet said that God is merciful to those who show mercy to the mankind. Islam regards all creatures as members of God's family. In short, Islam calls for peace and justice and mercy. Under no conditions does it legitimize strife. This is why terrorism can have no link whatsoever with Islam, he emphasised.

Mr. Ansari asked the government to take serious note of continued terror tactics in India with an open mind and to make sure that the patrons of such ghastly acts are held accountable.

Bodh Gaya Serial Blasts: Handiwork of Hindutva Terrorists, Muslims and Buddhists prime target?

By Danish Ahmad Khan

With the approaching of Indian parliamentary elections, the communal forces have as usual started devising devious plans to rip apart the secular fabric of the Indian nation. Peace and communal harmony have become the latest casualties. In a dastardly attack, the Mahabodhi Temple complex in the temple town of Bodh Gaya in Gaya district of Bihar state was rocked by nine serial explosions on Sunday, July 7, 2013 morning. Though the blasts were of low intensity in which three tourists and two Buddhist monks were injured. No sooner had the blasts occurred, Indian TV channels and Hindutva terror forces ganged up and started targeting Muslims (as is the normal fashion with these elements as soon as a terror strike takes place somewhere in India) shouting from the rooftop that Indian Mujahideen was behind the attacks to take revenge from Buddhists for the massacre of hapless Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. It seemed as though Indian TV channels and Hindutva terror forces were already knowing beforehand that the Mahabodhi Temple complex was going to be targeted by none else than the Indian Mujahideen, and that too, only after the acrimonious split between JD(U) and BJP from Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government.

But there is more behind these serial blasts than meets the eyes. Let us see point-by-point where the needle of suspicion after all points to and who are the real culprits behind these cowardly acts.

Why Bodh Gaya blasts only before advent of Ramadan?

The timing of Bodh Gaya serial blasts and the targeting of Muslims have much to tell behind this game plan, which clearly seems to have been implemented by Hindutva terrorism forces. The fact that the blasts took place only a few days before the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan cannot be ignored. The fact that the serial blasts took place in the wee hours with the help of locally manufactured bombs cannot be lost sight of either. After all, what does the timing of the blasts point out? The reasons are obvious and simple to reckon. The blasts took place in early morning with an intent to inflict minimal damage both to the Mahabodhi Temple complex and lives of people, and at the same time terrorize the tourists, Buddhist monks and pilgrims and create animosity against Muslims. The blasts were carried out with a specific purpose of disturbing peace in Gaya and simultaneously target Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government for its failure to heed to earlier intelligence inputs and provide more security to the Mahabodhi Temple complex. Had the blasts taken place in the midst of holy month of Ramadan, it would have been entirely difficult for the Hindutva terror goons to target Muslims as they are doing with a flourish now in association with their chums the Indian TV channels.

Targeting the Mahabodhi Temple complex is not the only exception. Hindutva forces have always been trying to target places of worship in Gaya and disturb peace. In April 2012, communal forces targeted Muslim mosques, indulged in heavy stone pelting in mosques and set Muslim-owned shops on fire. All this was done during Ramnavmi procession, which was allowed to pass through disputed routes instead of traditional ones on the instruction by Kotwali SHO and at the behest of Hindutva leaders. Earlier only 26 Ramnavmi processions were allowed in Gaya town, but this time 60 processions were permitted. People of Gaya had then alleged that more than one hundred Shiv Sainiks were exported from outside Bihar to create mayhem and orchestrate communal riots in Gaya.

It is therefore not hard to believe that serial blasts at Mahabodhi Temple complex could be the handiwork of Hindutva terror forces. It is common knowledge that Hindutva terror elements are known to target or usurp places of worship of other faiths.

Hindus and Buddhists at loggerheads over Mahabodhi Temple

Hindus and Buddhists have been constantly at loggerheads over the control of management of the Mahabodhi Temple complex. Buddhists have for long been demanding undiluted and complete control over the management of Mahabodhi Temple complex. The Mahabodhi Vihara (temple) was under Brahminical control during 1800s when a Hindu Mahanth (Caretaker) was controlling the temple. Anagarika Dharmapala, a Sri Lankan Buddhist pilgrim, visited the Mahabodhi Temple in 1891 and was shocked to see the temple in a pitiable condition. The Hindu Mahanth was doing nothing for the care or upkeep of the temple and was instead expropriating the generous donations and offerings made by the Buddhist pilgrims. Dharmapala vowed to free the temple from the clutches of the Mahanth and initiated an international campaign to re-establish Buddhist control over the Mahabodhi Temple. An infuriated Mahanth even ordered physical attacks and elimination of Dharmapala. But he survived the attacks, remained undeterred and moved forward on his mission to bring the Mahabodhi Temple under complete Buddhist control.

Buddhists from all over the world have since been struggling to demand that the Mahabodhi Temple must come under the control of Buddhists only. Even Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and the Indian National Congress had promised the Buddhists at Gaya Conference in 1922 that Mahabodhi Vihara would be handed over to them after India gained Independence from the British colonial rule.

Rabindra Nath Tagore, a Nobel Laureate, had also favored Buddhist control over the Mahabodhi Temple. Tagore even wrote an article in the Martibhumi journal in 1922. Tagore wrote thus: "I am sure it will be admitted by all Hindus who are true to their own ideals that it is an intolerable wrong to allow the temple raised on the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment to remain under the control of rival sect, which can neither have an intimate knowledge of, nor respect for Buddhist religion and its right of worship."

However, this promise has remained unfulfilled and Hindus continue to have a major say in the management of Mahabodhi Temple denying Buddhists their rightful due. The Buddhists have been demanding that the Bodh Gaya Temple Act 1949, which was enacted by a committee constituted by Bihar Government and headed by the first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, should be repealed to pave the way for the constitution of an all-Buddhist committee to manage the affairs of the Mahabodhi Temple. Even former Bihar Governor R.S. Gavai and Bihar State Religious Trust Board chief Acharya Kishore Kunal had worked on a compromise formula to end the controversy. According to the formula the Hindu representation in the nine-man committee was brought down to four from the existing five to make the Mahabodhi Temple committee more balanced. The post of committee chairman was also made religious neutral and the post of secretary reserved for the Buddhists. The Gaya District Magistrate is the ex officio Chairman of the committee provided he/she is a Hindu. In the case of Gaya DM being a non-Hindu, the state government has to nominate a Hindu as Chairman of the temple committee. Such a situation arose only once when in 1960s a Muslim KM Zuberi became Gaya DM, and the state government had to nominate Jugeshwar Prasad Khalish, MLC, as the Chairman of Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee.

The Supreme Court of India had on September 22, 2012 admitted a petition seeking transfer of exclusive management rights of 2,500 year old Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, a world Heritage site since 2002, to the Buddhists from the Bihar government. Notices were issued to the Centre, Bihar government and Archaeological Survey of India by a bench of Justices Altamas Kabir (who later became Chief Justice of India) and J. Chelameswar on a petition by Bhadant Arya Nagarjun Surai Sasai. The Advocate appearing on behalf of the petitioner had contended that the management of the holiest Buddhist shrine by persons from other religions hurt the religious sentiments of the Buddhists and questioned the constitutional validity of provisions of 60-year-old Bodh Gaya Temple Management Act 1949, which permitted it.

Politicians ditched Buddhists

The Buddhist history in India was rediscovered by Alexander Cunnigham, Edwin Arnold, Hamilton Buchanan, Rajendralal Mitra, and many others. Many British administrators were also instrumental in the restoration, protection and preservation of the Mahabodhi Temple.

The Indian politicians have, however, always ditched the Buddhists in their struggle to regain complete Buddhist control over the temple committee. The politicians, most of them being Hindus, have sided only with Hindus in this case. On October 14, 1992, a Japanese monk, Bhadant Arya Nagarjuna Surai Sasai had launched a movement for the liberation of the Mahabodhi Temple from Hindu oppression by organizing a big rally at New Delhi's Boat Club which was attended by over 3 lakh Buddhists from India and foreign countries. But in the next four years nothing significant happened because Buddhists were ditched by the then Bihar Chief Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav and later on by his successor and wife Rabri Devi. Both Laloo Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi during their respective tenure as Chief Minister went back on their earlier promise of support to the Buddhist agitation launched by Bhadant Arya Nagarjuna Surai Sasai, thus leaving the Buddhists in the doldrums. The RSS had then also claimed credit for mobilizing the Hindu opposition against the Buddhists. Today, it is apparent that RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and Hindutva forces seem to have joined hands, shedding crocodile tears over Bodh Gaya serial blasts and questioning Nitish Kumar's failure to provide more security to the Mahabodhi Temple complex.

No retribution against Rohingya Muslim massacre in Myanmar

Given the Hindutva terror forces' prevailing animosity and hatred against both Muslims and Buddhists, it is absolutely wrong to accuse either Maoists or Muslims over this ghastly Bodh Gaya serial blasts, which is highly condemnable. Maoists have never been known to have targeted places of worship of other faiths. It is therefore wrong to implicate Maoists in this regard.

Insofar as Indian Muslims are concerned, it is true that on humanitarian grounds they have peacefully protested against the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as is being done elsewhere in the world. But staging violent protests is simply out of question and has never been done. In fact, we Indian Muslims have never wanted Rohingya Muslims to seek any kind of shelter or asylum in India. We believe that Rohingya Muslims are essentially of Bangladeshi origin. We consider both Pakistan and Bangladesh as failed nations. Ever since India's partition and the creation of Muslim nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh, we Indian Muslims have been facing the heat and rampant discrimination in every aspect of our daily lives, particularly housing, employment and education. So, we have no sympathy left for Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims. Attributing the retribution angle and harping on this issue constantly by Hindutva terror forces and India TV channels is simply nonsensical and clearly points to their inimical behavior towards Indian Muslims and mala fide intentions.

Over the past several years the Buddhists of Myanmar and Sri Lanka are increasingly taking to violence. But I have always found the Indian Buddhists to be peace loving. Being a native of Gaya myself, I had got the privilege of playing Badminton with some Buddhist monks who used to visit my residence. Even the Dalai Lama regularly donates prayer mattresses to a Muslim madrassa in Bodh Gaya near the Mahabodhi Temple complex. Muslims of Gaya have always been on good terms with Buddhists in Bodh Gaya and maintained a harmonious relation with them. The peculiarity of Gaya has been that Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians and people of other faiths have been living in complete harmony since ages, never let any communal riots take place since Independence, and have together fought the communal forces keeping them at bay.

Bring culprits to justice. End animosity towards Muslims!

Bodh Gaya serial blasts is being seen in several quarters an outcome of the vicious fight between BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over Prime Ministerial ambitions as the Indian parliamentary elections gradually approaches. After the ruling combine JD(U) and BJP split after being in power for over 17 years, Narendra Modi had a day before Bodh Gaya serial blasts asked his party cadres to teach Nitish Kumar a lesson. Considering the fissiparous tendencies of Hindutva terror forces and their eternal potential to disturb communal harmony in the country, the Bodh Gaya serial blasts need to be seen strongly and seriously from this perspective as well.

The NIA and other intelligence agencies must probe all the angels related to the cowardly Bodh Gaya serial blasts. The culprits must be immediately apprehended and brought to justice. Extra precaution needs to be taken, particularly in non-Congress ruled states, as Hindutva forces are at their game plan in deepening the communal divide and vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in the country. Blind hatred and animosity against Muslims in India must end now.

The Benefits Of Fasting -- A Medical & Health Perspective

By Dr. Mian Ihsan Bari

In this article you will come to know some of the tremendous benefits that can be derived from a properly conducted fast. When properly utilized, fasting is a safe and effective means of maximizing the body's self-healing capacities. The results can be truly amazing. Before going on to describe some of the many advantages of fasting, let's define it. Fasting is the complete abstinence from all substances except pure water, in an environment of total rest. Let's also keep in mind that fasting is only one part of the total health-supporting program we call Natural Hygiene.

Health results from healthful living. No matter how successful a fasting experience might be, it needs to be followed by a consistently healthy lifestyle. The requirements of health must continue to be provided — especially in the areas of diet, environment, activity and psychology.

The examples that follow are just a few of the many beneficial uses of fasting.

An aid in transition

It is astonishing to see that thousands of patients from all over the world who had a wide variety of disorders and a great many of these patients required a period of supervised fasting to achieve their health goals. Virtually all of them needed to make lifestyle changes to achieve improved health. Fasting made the transition easier!

My observation is that the best motivating factor in helping people adopt healthful living practices is often the positive reinforcement that comes with feeling good and healthy.

Fasting, for as few as five days to as many as 40 days, will often dramatically shorten the time it takes for an individual to make the transition from a conventional diet and lifestyle (with all the associated addictions, pains, fatigue and disease) to the independent and energetic state associated with healthful living.

People who undertake a fast in a supervised setting, tend to achieve health more quickly than those who attempt changes without a fast. The intensive health education, plus the emotional support they receive during their stay, result in increased compliance with dietary and lifestyle recommendations.

A speedy recovery

When individuals try to make major dietary changes without the benefit of a fasting experience, they often become frustrated. The transition to a healthful eating pattern can make you feel sick. Symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, joint pain, headaches, skin rashes, irritability, depression, etc. are just a few of the common problems that can arise as the body attempts to eliminate toxins, metabolic byproducts, etc., and adjust physiologically to a health promoting diet.

It is difficult to get people to practice new healthful living habits for long unless they begin to experience some benefits quickly. Changes that may take months (or even years) with careful eating may occur much more quickly if a properly supervised fast is utilized. This is an important consideration because once people begin to realize their health potential, they become a likely candidate for a lifelong commitment to healthful living.

Overcoming addictions

Addictions to drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, nicotine and caffeine are examples where fasting can dramatically reduce the often protracted withdrawal symptoms that prevent many people from becoming drug-free. Most people are surprised at how easy it is to quit smoking or drinking with the help of fasting.

Uterine fibroid tumors

Fasting can often be especially important in situations where drugs or surgery have been recommended. When uterine fibroid tumors contribute to pain and excess bleeding, a hysterectomy — removal of the uterus — is often recommended. A proper fast will often dramatically reduce the size and effect of these tumors. I have treated numerous women who have been able to successfully avoid hysterectomy using conservative methods. Ovarian cysts and cervical dysplasia also often respond favorably.

Back and neck problems

Back and neck pain are remarkably responsive to conservative care. In my institution I utilize fasting, rest and exercise, improved posture and body use, and when appropriate, chiropractic manipulation and physical therapy. It is interesting to note that often patients with chronic pain who have received extensive treatment, including drugs, surgery and manipulation, will experience dramatic improvement through the use of fasting.

A case history

Recently a young man was treated who was a Natural Hygienist since birth, who had been in a severe automobile accident four years ago. He had suffered with constant neck pain and headaches since the accident. His greatest concern was his tendency to pass out unexpectedly. Apparently the dysfunction in his neck had interfered with the autonomic portion of his nervous system altering blood flow to his brain.

After a period of four weeks of care, which included a fast, followed by careful re-feeding and, in his case, spinal manipulative therapy, this individual made an excellent response. At his three month follow-up he reported complete absence of neck pain and headaches and had not felt faint or passed out since his stay at the Center.

Cardiovascular disease

Most cases of cardiovascular disease are also responsive to conservative care. In 154 consecutive cases of high blood pressure [hypertension] that I have fasted, 151 (98%) have been able to achieve and maintain normal blood pressure without the use of medications. [Complete details of this study will appear in an upcoming issue of Health Science.]

Angina and intermittent claudication are examples of conditions that will often respond rapidly to fasting. Often patients can achieve freedom from pain and medications within a few days or weeks. It is not unusual to see cholesterol levels drop as much as 100 points with diligent effort.

Gastrointestinal disorders

Disturbances of the gastrointestinal system — including esophagitis, gastritis, colitis, constipation, bloating, and the symptoms associated with so-called "candidiasis" — usually respond well to conservative care.

My most recent case of gastrointestinal disturbance was a young woman with severe colitis [inflammation of the colon]. She reported severe, constant bleeding through the rectum. She said that despite continual medical treatment with cortisone, implants, and a wide range of other medication, she had bleeding with every bowel movement for eight years. Her physician had explained that surgery would have to be performed.

After we had eliminated her medications, a period of fasting was undertaken. Within a week, the constant pain was resolved. By the 10th day, the passing of blood and mucus had stopped. After two weeks of fasting we began to carefully feed her. Her bowel movements were blood-free from the first. At her three-month follow-up she reported feeling great and completely free of any significant bleeding or problems.

Diabetes

Many chronic degenerative conditions respond well to fasting and a Natural Hygiene lifestyle. Diabetes is no exception.

Working with diabetic patients is very satisfying because the consequences of the disease are so devastating and the results with conservative care are usually so dramatic. Most adult onset diabetics can be brought under control and freed from the use of insulin and other medication through the use of fasting and a carefully followed diet and lifestyle program. Such a program will allow most diabetics to achieve a high level of function and the ability to maintain normal sugar levels without medications.
There are exceptions

Not everyone is a candidate for fasting. There are a number of factors to consider before a fast is recommended. My procedure is to first review the patient's medical history and perform a comprehensive physical examination including appropriate laboratory or specialized diagnostic tests. I then review my findings with the patient and make appropriate recommendations. These may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations. These may include dietary and lifestyle changes, exercise programs, etc., and, when indicated, fasting. When fasting is indicated, patients stay at my institution.

Not every individual or every condition will respond to conservative treatment. Occasionally medical care may be necessary. When a medical consultation or treatment is indicated, the safest methods available should be utilized.

Where to fast

With the possible exception of very short fasts in acute disease — such as a cold, fever, etc.— all fasting should be undertaken in an institution under the direct supervision of a doctor trained in fasting supervision. A certified member of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians would by far be your best choice.

Fasting in an institution offers several advantages. The most important is the constant availability of an experienced doctor to guide and advise you. Most institutions have an educational program designed to help you better understand Natural Hygiene — the science of health. The benefits of being in a clean, quiet and emotionally supportive environment should not be underestimated.

In addition, a timely and proper termination of each fast is critical to the long-term success of the patient. Fasting under the supervision of a trained, qualified doctor is your best assurance of a well-conducted, beneficial fasting experience.

A Case Study

Chronic gastrointestinal disorder

"A woman came to a medical center who had suffered chronic constipation for more than 20 years. She complained that she had not had a single spontaneous bowel movement during that time without the assistance of enemas, colonics or laxatives.

"She fasted for a period of 12 days, during which time she experienced mild discomfort and referred low back pain. On the fifth day of feeding after the fast, she was having spontaneous, normally formed bowel movements — and she had continued to have them since.

"The long-term follow-up for people who stay on the Natural Hygiene dietary program is excellent. Chronic constipation is definitely a problem that people can learn to live without."

A natural process

"Fasting, or the abstinence from food, is a means used in nature by all creatures from the beginning of time. Either by instinct or intelligence this means has been used to assist the body to relieve itself from discomfort, pain and disease.

"Regulatory and reparative processes of the body are given unimpeded encouragement by the temporary omission of food. No other form of health care can boast the rewarding and gratifying results in the elimination of disease and the restoration of health.
"Fasting, once considered a fad, has gained acceptance not only by a constantly increasing segment of society — and has also earned the stamp of approval by many in the scientific community.

"Under qualified and experienced supervision, fasting is the greatest gift which can be given to an overburdened, sick body without benefit of any other form of therapy or treatment."

An empowering rest

"Fasting is simply a process of deep physiological rest. This rest period helps you rebuild functioning power and recover from the energy dissipation caused by hectic daily schedules and abusive living habits.

"When outside stressors, dietary and therapeutic influences are eliminated during the fasting state, fasting reveals the baseline status of your body. This enables you to become more sensitive and connected to your body. This connection fosters a greater awareness of the instinctive biological and emotional requirements that are essential for the maintenance of health and wholeness."

Unfounded fears about fasting

"Unfounded fear is a peculiar state of disease within the imagination, arising largely out of a lack of knowledge.

"If we are slaves to unfounded fears, we are also slaves to beliefs and practices and action which are inconsistent with our well-being. So it is a matter of necessity that we understand fasting and all its facets if we are to overcome the fears that are associated with it.

"Many people attempt to solve the problems of life, the distresses of the body and the anxieties of the mind with food and drugs. They have great fear about not eating because they have experienced the headaches, the weakness and distress they associate with it, and they are convinced that food and drugs are the answer to their problems.

"How can you convince someone that going further without food is a matter of necessity for the recovery of his health? Only through knowledge and enough suffering to change his attitudes.

"The best way to dispel unfounded fear about fasting is with knowledge — knowledge that breeds confidence, confidence that engenders beliefs, and beliefs that result in correct action."

Making wise decisions

"Not everyone is a good candidate for fasting. Many factors need to be considered before a fast is undertaken. Not every condition will respond optimally to fasting and conservative care alone. Occasionally, medical care may be necessary.

" When a medical consultation or treatment is indicated, the safest methods available should always be utilized."

Heightening your awareness

"A wonderful thing about fasting is that it puts an interval between the behavior that you are accustomed to and the behavior that you aspire to. We tend to be creatures of habit, and the ways that we are accustomed to eating and living feel as natural to us as breathing. That is why it is so difficult for people to stop bad habits. But fasting brings your present lifestyle to an abrupt halt. It gives you an opportunity to pause, reflect and decide how you are going to conduct your life afterwards. This enables you to make a break with your past and set off in a new, more positive direction.

"There is nothing routine about eating after a fast. Each meal is a celebration. After fasting, you tend to be very conscious about what you are eating, and why. Fasting heightens your awareness, as well as your appreciation for food. By fasting, we learn to eat with reverence.

"It is the non-doing aspect of fasting that enables us to make behavioral stopping and pausing and interrupting our usual patterns, as we learn to take more conscious control of ourselves.

"There is no better way to stop a vicious cycle of self-destructive behavior than by fasting."

London: Secretary of State Rt Teresa May MP launched Iftar2013 in the Islamic centre Maidenhead on the evening of 11th July. With 100’s of community members in attendance.

She welcomed the initiative of Iftar2013 and said, “The Iftar’s in Mosques are a wonderful way to bring communities together and to help people understand the Islamic practices that take place in Mosques.”

She also said, “British Muslim community’s generosity in the month of Ramadan and the sharing of the Ramadan feast via the Iftar2013 campaign is to be commended and applauded.”

The Iftar, the evening meal that breaks the Muslim fast during the holy month of Ramadan, is a time of celebration that traditionally includes the hosting of guests and travellers.

This year, Ramadan is between (10th July to 9th August 2013) and in the spirit of collaboration and friendship mosques across the UK will open their Iftar celebrations to neighbours, visitors, Muslims, non-Muslims, officials and Embassy staff from across the world.

Following the spate of attacks on UK Mosques following the brutal murder Lee Rigby, Mosques across the UK will be opening their doors for the communities to experience the ’Ramadan Iftar Celebrations” This will give visitors a chance to experience Ramadan with local Muslim communities. They will sample warm hospitality and experience the cultural mix of mosques around the UK: a huge range of culinary dishes from Asia, Africa, Europe and the near and far East will be available at different mosques. The Scouts Association enthusiastically supports the initiative and scouts across the country will be on hand to help serve guests during the Iftar meals.

Shaukat Warraich Director of Iftar 2013 said: “I am delighted that so many mosques across the UK are taking part Iftar celebrations... I hope people will keep an open mind and come along to local mosques. They will be warmly welcomed and there will be a chance to do some Myth busting about the Mosques and Islam”

Israel and its significance to Muslims

By Elizabeth Eisenstadt-Evans

To ignore the significance of the land of Israel to Muslims would be not only to slight the world's third so-called Abrahamic faith, but to ignore the geopolitical realities of the Middle East.

Muslims, or adherents of the religion of Islam, are not very numerous in the United States (estimates hover around 3 million or less, though that number outstrips those in many mainline Protestant denominations).

In America, where it makes news when a Muslim wins a Congressional seat, (in the 112th Congress there were two), Christians and Jews dominate the dialogue about Israel.

But as some of the scholars and clergy interviewed for this series have pointed out, when it comes to resolving long-term tensions in the land considered blessed by all three faiths, Muslims, most specifically Palestinian Muslims, must have one of the two major seats at the table.

The links between Muslims, Jews and Christians were forged more than millennia ago, when, according to Islam, the Quran was dictated to the prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel.

Considered the authoritative, infallible revelation of God, the Quran is rich in allusions to biblical characters, including Adam and Eve, Abraham, Lot, Mary the mother of Jesus, and other characters from the Christian Scriptures.

Moses is mentioned more times in the Quran than the prophet Muhammad himself, according to Islamic scholar and Imam Zaid Shakir of California's Zaytuna College. The Quran also quotes from the Psalms, the Torah (first five books of the Bible), and the Gospels in their "original" versions, Shakir adds.

Though there is no specific scriptural foundation for the belief, according to Khalid Blankinship, Al-Haram Al-Ibrahimi, the sanctuary of Abraham in the West Bank city of Hebron, is the fourth most sacred site in Islam. It is considered to be the tomb of the patriarchs and their wives.

The "Sacred Mosque" in Mecca, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Mosque of the Prophet) in Medina, and Al-Aqsa Mosque (the farthest Mosque) in Jerusalem are the three other sacred places, in descending order of sacredness" he adds.

"The al-Aqsa enclosure contains the Dome of the Rock as well as the al-Aqsa Mosque itself," says Blankinship, chair of Temple University's religion department. It is from the Rock that Muhammad is believed by Muslims to have ascended into heaven after his "night journey," says Blankinship, who cites this verse from the Quran ("His Servant" is commonly thought to be Muhammad): "Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing."

Because of these historic and spiritual connections, any Muslim whose life is dedicated to worshipping God views the area as significant, Shakir says. But, in a material sense, the land has an additional importance to Palestinian Muslims, he suggests.

"As the land is sacred to all three, everyone, regardless of their religion, should have the right to live in peace."

When Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together on the land as religious communities, there was a history of "peace and harmony and mutual respect" he says. But "when it became a nationalist issue … it became a conflict of particular intensity. "

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians will be solved when Israel placates the Palestinians without being coercive, says Blankinship, who concurs with Shakir that the issue isn't fundamentally a clash of faiths.

"The rampant religion of the day is not religion, but nationalism," Blankinship says, one in which nationalists will use sacred texts to justify their own positions.

The only viable resolution, argues Shakir, is not a two-state or a one-state solution, but a "no-state" one, in which participants are able to "move into a new way of envisioning political community, not dependent on territory, but the human and religious experience of everyone who shares the land."

It is hard to imagine what that might look like. As Blankinship unspools the many complexities that attend the current conflict, it also is easy to become discouraged, mired in a morass of devilish detail.

But I keep thinking of something Muslim convert and local Lancaster supply imam Erich Scherfen says about the spiritual commonalities between the three faiths who claim the inheritance of Abraham.

"Jesus Christ himself was a Palestinian citizen (the Romans called Israel Palestine, he said, as a way of getting back at Jewish insurgents). If there had been such a thing as a passport, Jesus' passport would have had a Palestinian stamp."

Throughout history, adherents of all three faiths have known what it is like to be persecuted in the name of God, to have been oppressed by foreign governments, to have made huge sacrifices so that their heritage would be preserved for future generations. Will the universality of these experiences be enough to bring them together in tolerance?

While the path isn't clear, there is reason, if not much reason yet, to hope.

Zambia: Islamic Supreme Council calls for secular studies in Muslim schools

The Islamic Supreme Council of Zambia has called for the introduction of secular studies in Muslim schools in the country.

Copperbelt coordinator Isa Nangu Zgambo said Muslim schools should also be teaching secular studies so that pupils could enrol in secular tertiary institutions and later work in a secular society.

Mr Zgambo said the current situation, where Islamic schools only offered Quran studies was disadvantaging pupils who could not fit into a secular society even after being well-schooled.

“The Islamic lessons being offered are very good but we also understand that we live in a secular world. Our children should get secular studies as well so that they are not limited,” he said.

Mr Zgambo also said there should be an immediate revision of accessing money and sponsorship from the Islamic Bank to ensure all eligible people benefit regardless of race.

He said even Prophet Mohammed never discriminated against race or background but wondered why the Islamic Bank loans and academic sponsorships were only being accessed by one race.

“Our children have tried so many times to get something from the Islamic Bank but only our brothers from the Asian community are accessing these benefits. This is not what Islam says,” he said.

Mr Zgambo also said it was unfortunate that the Asian community was refusing to recognise the Zambian leadership of the Islamic Supreme Council led by Grand Mufti Saddique Kaputula.

He said Government had provided leadership by providing a platform for the muslim community in the country to come up with a mother body but that the signs of divisions and cracks in the council were uncalled for.

“When the Asian community organise activities, we attend them but since we elected our Grand Mufti, they have been shunning us and now they say they won’t recognise his election,” he lamented.

The Zambian Muslim community have along with millions of other Moslems from other parts of the world embarked on a month long fasting ritual to observe the holy month of Ramadan of the Islamic calendar.

Taiwan eyeing Muslim market to boost exports

Taipei: More Taiwanese companies are interested in Muslim markets and have applied for Halal certification, which identifies them as trustworthy establishments that serve products in compliance with Islamic dietary law, according to the country's main trade promotion body.

As of June, nearly 150 local firms had obtained Halal certification, with some other 130 pending, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said in a recent statement.

"A small, local Muslim industry has formed," it said.

Business opportunities, TAITRA said, lie in not only the food sector, but also other commodities such as Islamic swimwear for women, prayer rugs, garments that make people feel cool and smartphones installed with the Koran.

Against this backdrop, the government has set up a task force to promote and develop Muslim markets worldwide, TAITRA said.

There are an estimated 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, making Islam the world's second-largest religion after Christianity, TAITRA said, citing a 2012 report by the Pew Research Center.

Taiwan is also making efforts to attract more Muslim tourists.

There are at least 31 restaurants throughout the country that are now certified as Halal, according to the Tourism Bureau.

Jewish groups assail Polish ban on kosher slaughter

'For a country still struggling to come to terms with its past treatment of Jews, it is outrageous to strike such a blow to the future of Jews in Poland,' Anti-Defamation League says.

Jewish groups voiced outrage on Friday after Poland's parliament rejected a government-backed bill that would have allowed slaughterhouses to produce kosher meat, angering Jewish groups who said the decision violated their religious rights.

Lawmakers who opposed the bill said they did so because kosher slaughter is cruel to livestock. Jewish groups said prejudice about their faith – a sensitive subject in a country where occupying Nazis killed millions of Jews – had played a part.

"Populism, superstition and political interests won out," said Piotr Kadlcik, who heads the Union of Jewish Communities of Poland. "It looks like we've made a full circle and are heading back to what happened in Poland and Germany in the 1930s."

Usually, slaughterhouses stun livestock before killing them, while kosher rites demand an animal is killed by slitting its throat while it is alive and allowing it to bleed to death. The halal meat consumed by observant Muslims is killed in a similar way.
The government had hoped the proposed law would allow Polish abattoirs to resume production of kosher meat, which was forced to stop last year by the constitutional court.

Some Jewish community leaders said the tone of the debate around the issue echoed the kind of anti-Semitic rhetoric seen in Europe before World War Two.

Poland was home to Europe's largest Jewish community before the outbreak of war in 1939, but the Holocaust all but wiped it out. Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz and Treblinka were located on Polish soil.

"The majority of Polish MPs gave the Polish Jewish community three choices: don’t practice your religion, don’t eat meat, or don’t live among us," said Abraham H. Foxman, director of the U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League.

"For a country still struggling to come to terms with its past treatment of Jews, it is outrageous to strike such a blow to the future of Jews in Poland.

"This vote was a clear violation of religious freedom, supported by the ignorance of some and the bigotry of others," Foxman added in his statement. "The debate demonstrated acceptance of the false premise that kosher slaughter, which involves a single cut with a razor-sharp knife to minimize pain, is less humane than slaughter with pre-stunning by electrocution, gassing or a bolt shot to the animal's forehead."

Activists have challenged religious slaughter customs in France and the Netherlands, mostly concentrating on halal slaughter by Muslims.

Industry groups in Poland have said banning halal and kosher meat production would stop firms from exporting to markets in Israel and the Middle East.

Opponents of the practice said that was no justification. "Even if we were talking about significant losses – and we're not – there is no permission for animal cruelty in the name of money," said Andrzej Rozenek, a leader of the leftist Palikot Movement.

The bill's defeat is a setback for Prime Minister Donald Tusk after 38 deputies from his own Civic Platform (PO) joined the opposition to defeat it.

"We urge Poland's legislative and judicial authorities to move expeditiously to recognize by law the Jewish community's right to prepare kosher meat according to Jewish tradition," David Harris, head of the American Jewish Committee, said in a statement.
"It would be beyond shocking if a democratic Poland prevented kosher slaughter, which is so integral to Jewish life in the country," Harris added.

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, an umbrella group, also voiced solidarity with Poland's Jewish community, and called on the government in the country to reaffirm the 1997 law "that protected schechita (Jewish ritual slaughter)."

The organization experssed “deep chagrin and dismay at the vote of the Sejm, the Polish Parliament, which upheld the ban on Jewish ritual slaughter, necessary for those who observe kosher dietary laws as well as the needs of the Muslim faith …The placing of restrictions and requirements that violate religious law denies the Jewish community its fundamental necessities."

Sulking BJP pulls coup over Cong in Madhya Pradesh; No-trust motion aborted in apparent violation of rules

Bhopal: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP), in Madhya Pradesh, sulking after the Raghavji episode wherein its Finance Minister was forced to quit following sodomy charges, pulled a sort of coup on Congress, the main Opposition party in the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, by welcoming senior Congress leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Chaudhary Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi into its fold with great enthusiasm.

The BJP committed this act of opportunism after Congress leader Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi punctured his party’s no-confidence motion in the state Assembly by opposing it even before it could be moved and debate initiated. The monsoon session of the 13th assembly, was adjourned sine die on Thursday, amid heated debate over no-trust motion’s legality, has raised some serious questions. The opinion of the members was not sought on Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Narottam Mishra’s proposal to adjourn the House sine die and it was done amidst stiff protests by the opposition members.

Also, the rule that a no-trust motion supported by at least ten percent of the members present and voting in the House will be accepted, was ignored after Congress MLA Rakesh Chaudhary expressed his objection on the no-trust motion.

Immediately after Leader of the Congress Opposition Ajay Singh was called upon by Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani to speak, Rakesh Singh Choudhary, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, sprang to his feet and started disputing his own party’s No-Confidence Motion. He said he did not agree with the motion on two grounds: one, it ignored the case of former Finance Minister Raghavji altogether and two, a recent tweet allegedly by Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh—"Baccha Baccha Ram Ka, Raghavji Ke Kam Ka”—was an insult to all Hindus. He said 80 per cent of us are Hindus, and it is an insult to Madhya Pradesh and an insult to all children.

The BJP benches, thereafter, started calling out for the name of the author of the Twitter message, but Chowdhary Rakesh Singh refrained from naming the person. BJP leader Narottam Mishra, who obviously was at the helm of this political engineering, spoke next: “The Leader of the Opposition does not have the confidence of his own party. I would recommend, rather than tabling a no-confidence motion against the BJP government, Ajay Singh should first go and earn that for himself from his own party leaders.”

Rakesh Singh alleged that he wanted some changes in the no-confidence proposal. He said that 721 pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh were still missing in Uttarakhand and the Congress needed to bring that up too. Then he added: "I am a Hindu by birth when I saw an offensive tweet about Ram and Raghavji, it hurt my religious sentiments. I request that the Raghavji issue be discussed as part of the no-confidence motion and also that the former finance minister's immoral acts should not be used to insult the children of Madhya Pradesh." He further said that he did not believe in the no-confidence proposal as presented by the Congress opposition.

The BJP created ruckus as a puzzled Congress stared disbelievingly at its own leader. The BJP was quick to react as minister for industries and commerce Kailash Vijayvargiya raised a "point of order'' with speaker Ishwardas Rohani. Vijayvargiya said: "This is for the first time in the history of the state that the leader of opposition has proposed a no-confidence against the government and his deputy has opposed the same." He quoted from the book of rules and codes and claimed that if a member of the opposition opposes a no-confidence then the motion is not applicable and annulled.

The ruckus continued and the house was adjourned for half-an-hour. Uproar continued as the house reassembled. Ajay Singh raised his point of order that one person's defection does not stand, as all other Congress MLAs were in support of the motion. The Congress demanded the no-confidence discussion while legislative affairs minister Narottam Mishra quoted more rules and regulations and demanded the House be adjourned sine die. Chief minister Chouhan told the house that Rakesh Singh was the deputy speaker and no ordinary MLA. Rakesh Singh has put his whole career at stake to bring up a valid point which he believes in. "We will reply to the Congress' allegations on the field and in every constituency," Chouhan said.

The legislative affairs minister showed the rule book to the speaker, while Ajay Singh snapped, "Don't show the rule book. Show the suitcase that you delivered." Even as the ruckus continued, the speaker said: "I have been informed by the legislative affairs minister that all business for the monsoon session has been completed. Hence, this house is being adjourned indefinitely."

It is being questioned as to why when the BJP enjoys the number power in Madhya Pradesh, and since the no-confidence movement was not to be a success anyway, was this kind of a masterminding required? The answer maybe lies in the fact that the 16-page charge sheet filed by the Congress against the BJP in the Assembly, is one with each allegation backed by documented proof and evidence. If tabled and discussed it could have caused great embarrassment for the BJP. What better way but to turn it ‘null and void’, and that too by firing the salvo from the Opposition’s own shoulder?

Stabbed in the back

Later, inside the MP Vidhan Sabha, speaking to media persons, Rahul Singh said, “We have been knifed in the back by one of our own.”

Blaming Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan for the incident, he said, Chauhan engineered this to avoid a discussion on charges against his near and dear ones.

Meanwhile, an hour later, Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi was in the BJP office flanked by chief minister Chouhan, his cabinet ministers and the state BJP chief. He will now contest the upcoming November polls on a BJP ticket.

Chaturvedi announced his decision to join BJP at a press conference. He said he had spoken against the no-confidence motion in the Assembly as a matter of principle and maintained he could not compromise with his ideology. He said he would work with total devotion for BJP in the state which is to hold Assembly elections by the end of this year. His father, Dilip Singh, had been elected to the state Assembly on a BJP ticket in 1980.

Chaturvedi's departure is being seen as a setback for Congress, which has lost the last two Assembly elections (2003 and 2008) in the state.

According to sources Assembly speaker seeks the opinion of the House on every resolution before it is passed but in the case of Dr. Mishra’s proposal, the speaker Ishwardas Rohani did not seek the House’s wish and announced unilaterally that House be adjourned sine die.

Bombshell

Meanwhile, the bombshell that Congress’ Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi dropped in the Vidhan Sabha, before ending his 23-year-old association with his party and jumping on the BJP bandwagon, might have come as a stunner for the Congress leadership, as also for most of the ruling party MLAs but the fact is that Rakesh Singh was only enacting a script penned long back—as much as a month back, some say.

Legislative affairs Minister Narottam Mishra has emerged as the hero of the entire episode as it was his ground work that helped BJP stage a coup of sorts, turning the tables on the opposition. To be fair to the Congress, the party’s top brass did have inkling that Rakesh Singh might desert them but no one in the party had an idea of what the BJP had up its sleeve.

Narottam Mishra, it is believed, had started cultivating Rakesh Singh almost a month back. Both hail from the Gwalior- Chambal region.Narottam diligently worked on the grievances Rakesh was nursing against the state Congress leadership, especially Ajay Singh. Rakesh was also game because he was not very confident of his victory from Bhind constituency on Congress ticket in the elections. The deal was almost finalised at a dinner hosted by Mishra at his residence about a week back, in which BJP organisational general secretary Arvind Menon and Rakesh Singh were guests.

Rakesh Singh was cut-up with Congress leadership ever since he was not nominated as the leader of opposition— a position he believed he deserved eminently. The fact that Congress did not come to his aid when he was expelled from the House in the last monsoon session on the charge of insulting the Chair only added to his disenchantment. And by ditching the party at a crucial moment— which Ajay Singh described as ‘ back- stabbing’— Rakesh has more than taken his revenge.

Rumour mills are already abuzz with details of a sum of Rs.25 crore already paid, a warehouse allotted, same seat from Bhind promised along with a ministerial berth, and the assurance that all criminal cases pending against Choudhary Rakesh Singh would be quashed.

"Ma'm, Kya Pakistan mein Hindus rehte hai?" (Ma'm, Do Hindus live in Pakistan?) asked a student.

"Haan, Beta. Pakistan mei Hindu, Sikh, Christians, sab rehte hai" (Yes my dear, there are Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and people of other religions in Pakistan), replied Saeeda Diep, a renowned Peace Activist and Chairperson, Institute of Peace & Secular Studies, Lahore from Pakistan.

"Pakistan ke log hamare baare mei kya soche hai?" (What do people from Pakistan think about us?) came another question.

To which, she replied, "Pakistan ke log aapke culture ke baare mein kuch jaante hai kyuki India ke kaafi channels Pakistan ke TV mein aate hai. Lekin, Pakistan ka koi channel, India mein nai dikhaya jaata, isliye aapko sirf wahi pata hai jo aapke news channels aapko batate hai." (Pakistanis know about your country and culture because they have access to Indian TV channels but unforunately, no pakistani channels are permitted in India so Indians only know what the news channels portray.)

Several other questions, some related to political issues and controversies, were posed to Saeeda ji during 'Aman Chaupal', an initiative of Aaghaz-e-Dosti for Indo-Pak peace and friendship. This was the first Aman Chaupal wherein Saeeda Diep Ji , a renowned Peace activist and Chairperson of Institute of Peace & Secular Studies (IPSS) interacted with students from classes 6th-12th on 10th July 2013 at Coumbia Foundation Sr Sec School , New Delhi.

The interaction was entirely in Hindi as according to Saeeda ji, speaking in English would be very "artificial".

Aaghaz-e-Dosti, an initiative of India-based Mission Bhartiyam, works to create unwavering bonds of peace and friendship between India and Pakistan. Under this initiative, it has launched Aman Chaupal with the aim to enhance people-to-people communication. Like in our traditional baithaks or chaupals, people from Pakistan or those who have been to Pakistan share their experiences. It is an interactive session meant to address and arouse curiosity.

First Aman Chaupal was organized at Columbia Foundation Sr Sec School, Vikaspuri, New Delhi. In her address to students of Columbia Foundation Sr Sec School, Saeeda Diep ji talked about the general stereotypes and misconceptions that people have about Pakistan and Pakistanis. She tried to show them the side of Pakistan that Indians never get to know because of lack of communication and a biased or as she had put it, "hawkish" media. The session was entirely devoted to a question-answer format wherein Saeeda ji had answered students' questions.

It ended with the Principal, Ms. Deepshika Dandu, sharing her personal experiences with Pakistanis during her stay in a foreign nation. She remarked that, "In a foreign nation, Indians and Pakistanis often form a transnational community bounded by a shared culture, language and experience." Coordinator from the school to organize this program was Ms. Meenu.

The Aghaz-e-Dosti team is thankful to the principal, to the co-ordinator, Ms. Meenu, for allowing this programme.

On the same day, Second Aman Chaupal was organised at South Asian University, New Delhi. It began with a meeting with the President or the Vice chancellor of the university, Prof. G.K. Chaddha. Prof. Chaddha gave a very warm welcome to Saeeda ji. The conversation which was entirely in punjabi revolved around their personal experiences, memories, and about the university.

After the meeting, Saeeda ji had also interacted with a small group and answered their questions.

This programme was co-ordinated by Aaghaz-e-Dosti team consisting of Ravi Nitesh, Devika Mittal and V Arun Kumar. The organisers believe that in this current scenario of disturbed relations, Aman Chaupal is an important resource for peace and friendship. It is important for people to know what the other side is because miscommunication has been the most dangerous weapon. So they plan to organise Aman Chaupal in several other schools in India as well as in Pakistan.

Barking Narendra Modi cannot think beyond dogs

Muslims must better ignore Modi as if he is a non-entity

Dr Javed Jamil

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has at least one quality for which he must be duly complemented. He says and does what his heart, mind and soul feel right. So if he is sitting in a car and is guiding the driver to race the car on the road in the direction he wants, he at least tells the driver not to try too much to avoid hitting a dog. If it gets killed he will only have to make it appear that he has not hit him intentionally; the owner will then do what is needed: feel sad about it; and then move on towards his next destination. Modi chose to own the Gujarat Car and when he found that many “dogs” have been killed, he is at least ready to say that it saddened him; but his sadness would not stop him from his life long ambition of owning the India car. Once the car is his, he will tell the driver to move again without caring much about the dogs. The speed of the car is more important than the dogs it hits on the way.

Modi has again got it right when he says that “he is a nationalist Hindu”. There is nothing wrong about it. Instead what should have been asked was: what is the definition of “nation” in his dictionary and “Does his nation have Muslims as equal partners”. Neither the majority of Hindus agree with BJP definition of “Hindu” nor most of the Indians with their definition of “Nation”. So while both Gandhi and Modi can be nationalist Hindus, Modi would perhaps love to be a nationalist Hindu in the Godse mould.

By now, Dr Zafar Mahmood must have realized how ill-conceived, even if well-intentioned, was his decision to make a presentation to Modi and hope he would change. Fond as Modi seems to be of dogs, the famous analogy of “Kutte ki dum ko 12 saal tak bottle mein rakho to bhi terhi hi niklegi” (Cut a Dog's tail and enclose it in a bottle for 12 years, and it will yet remain crooked) seems to perfectly befit him.

By repeatedly making such statements, Modi is on the way to achieve for BJP what it wants. The more the media reacts to such remarks, the more it will suit them. So it will be better if Muslims now start ignoring him altogether. If Congress or other political parties make an issue of it, let them make it. But it will be better for Muslims if they keep their focus on the problems of the nation as a whole: economic disparity, security issues, anti-poor model of development and the inability of the nation to take its second largest majority along, in terms of participation as well as fruits. Muslims must understand that non-BJP parties will find it easier to run the fight if the issue of communalism remains in focus. With the increasing polarization, they will feel more and more secure. Muslims on the other hand must make it sure that while on one hand they will make sure that the divisive forces are defeated they will not let the other parties win without doing what is required from them.

SPECIAL REPORT: Hindu organizations known for terror mischief, Bodh Gaya Serial Blasts seem to be their handiwork, says RTI Activist Aroop Brahmachari

By Shafi Ahmad

It was long back in 1949 a politics was played by Hindus against Buddhists regarding the control over the management of the Mahabodhi Temple complex. It was then decided that the management will lay in the hands of Hindus and a committee was made as Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC). The representatives of the committee comprised of Hindus only, but when later strogly protested by Buddhists, it was then amended, and 4 Hindus and 4 Buddhists were made BTMC members with the District Magistrate of Gaya as its ex-officio Chairman.

Ever since the formation of BTMC, the Buddhists have expressed their displeasure over the inclusion of Hindus and have been demanding that the Mahabodhi Temple complex should be handed over to them for better management. The demand of Buddhists for excusive control over the Mahabodhi Temple has however been turned down time and again.

In retrospect, an RTI has been filed to know as to how many Buddhist temples are in the control and management of Hindus. The outcome is yet to be known. However, except Buddhist temples that remain under effective control of Hindus, other places of worship of minorities like those of Muslims and Sikhs strictly remain under their exclusive control without any interference from Hindus whatsoever. Even an inquiry was done physically to know whether any other member from other breakaway Hindu sects like Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists were also part of the management of the Vishnu Pad Mandir, the reply from Hindus was that we cannot let any people of other religions like Buddhists, Sikhs or Jains to interfere into our religion.

The Buddhists are now rightfully asking after all why are Hindus continuing to interefere into our religious beliefs and temples when they don't allow any Hindu breakaway sects to interfere in their religious beliefs or temples. Hindus have contended that according to Lord Vishnu's Dashavatar, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is that of the Buddha. Considering this plea, some section of the Buddhists have accordingly demanded that they be allowed to have their say in the management of Vishnu Pad Mandir, which Hindus are not going to oblige Buddhists in any case.

Some of the Hindu members of BTMC have even allowed pind daan in the Mahabodhi Temple which has been objected to by the Buddhists several times. They have also written to the higher authorities also but all has fallen on the deaf ears of the Hindu authorities and the pind daan has become the regular feature of the Mahabodhi Temple.

Earlier, the Mahabodhi Tree was cut and smuggled, but no complete inquiry has been done or findings revealed. The audit, which was done to assess the expenditure and the donation, exemplifies the functioning and corrupt practices of the BTMC. Nearly Rs. 20 crore have been deposited into the different accounts and the interest being earned on this huge amount is not being accounted and nobody knows who is pocketing all the interest or which party's coffers is being filled. Much to chagrin, the accumulated money is also neither being used in the social work nor in any development work of the Mahabodhi Temple.

Despite warning issued by the IB of an impending threat to the Mahabodhi Temple by terrorists, the BTMC only put a security personnel to check the visitors before entering the Mandir. Otherwise, there was zero security in the Mahabodhi Temple complex.

Aroop Brahmachari, a RTI activist, has been writing regularly to the BTMC regarding the security of the Mahabodhi Temple but no reply has been received from the Home Secretary of Bihar, Chief Secretary of Bihar, DGP and the Gaya District Magistrate for which he says that there is a serious connivance among these people. The inclusion of the four monks in the BTMC has also been questioned in a RTI petition but that too hangs in suspense.

Former Bihar Urban Development Minister Prem Kumar who had provided the Mahabodhi Temple with the latest surveillance camera seemed to be only a wonderful piece of décor. Neither the photography is captured well nor the date is updated through this surveillance camera.

The way in which BJP has behaved during Bodh Gaya serial blasts is highly suspicious and brings their vicious role and behaviour into question. Mr. Priyapal (Chairman of Chakma Refugee) and RTI activist Aroop Brahmachari say that the fact that serial blasts may be the handiwork of the Hindu organizations also cannot be overlooked. They have been involved in such type of terror mischief before. They said that the National Investigative Agency (NIA) has done wonderful work earlier, like the Samjhauta Express blasts and other such developments, and they are quite hopeful that NIA will also try to bring out the culprits in Bodh Gaya serial blasts. "The state govt has taken the right step to hand the investigation to them and in no time the real culprit will be brought to light," said Aroop Brahmachari.

Mr. Priyapal and Aroop Brahmachari also said that the terrorists have attacked their holy place which is just like Mecca for us and it is attack on our hearts which is bleeding. The place which always propagated for peace and harmony has been tore apart and we have lost the faith in the government. The Mahabodhi Temple complex management should be immediately handed over to the Buddhists with their exclusive and complete control so that further destruction could be saved.

Bodh Gaya Serial Blasts: 'Hindutva terror forces trying to derail investigation, pressurizing agencies to implicate Muslims'

Even for those who advocate Myanmar-Muslim angle in the blast must know local Muslims of Gaya have hardly any feel for the atrocities on Rohingya Muslims.

By M Shamsur Rabb Khan

The timing of nine low intensity bomb blasts at Mahabodhi Temple is crucial. And the selection of the place is also crucial. But what is the motive behind the blasts? In the absence of any claim, we have usual speculations on mainstream TV channels and newspapers: Indian Mujahedeen (IM) is considered as suspect. This is the red herring. This means at the very outset we are trying to derail the investigation or pressurize the agencies to look into a particular direction. This is a nasty politics, not a genuine security concern. Ever since the onslaught of terrorism, vested interests have used the weapon of terror strikes to castigate blame on a community, prosecute innocent people and grab power in the name of saving the country.

Well, a place of Lord Buddha, a place of peace and a place of international tourists’ destination as the target of bomb explosions, the selection of Bodh Gaya means to allow analysts to create Myanmar-Muslim angle, with an added emphasis on IM. There is no denying the fact that the perpetrators have definite design of killing two birds with one stone: gains to someone, blame on someone. And since public opinion, due to incessant propaganda, is likely to believe in certainty that IM, which is an obscure outfit is behind the blasts, the objective is nearly fulfilled, if there is a communal divide in a state progressing on the path of development. The people of Bihar in general and Gaya in particular must understand this.

But who are the beneficiaries? The opponents of Nitish Kumar, of course. And yes, opponents of peaceful coexistence of communities. Interestingly, Prem Kumar, the former minister in Nitish Kumar cabinet, staged a protest against the visiting Chief Minister with ‘go back’ slogan at Bodh Gaya.

How, in few days’ gap, politicians change colours to become foe from friend! We can understand the BJP is fuming with anger for vengeance. Power is such a lust that politicians can go to any length; they can stage horse-trading for a political coup, they can order fake encounters for political gains, and they can hire goons to trigger large scale pogrom for the government chair. All these have happened in India. If the people of Gujarat could side with Naredra Modi, a man who presided over the killings of thousands of innocent people, then the people of Bihar must side with Nitish Kumar, a man who showed how to take a state towards progress.

Even for those who advocate Myanmar-Muslim angle in the blast must know local Muslims of Gaya have hardly any feel for the atrocities on Rohingya Muslims. And if killing of citizens of Myanmar is the motive by local Muslims or IM it should have been carried out during Annual 9-day Buddhist Congregation when the casualty could be huge. But that does not seem to be the purpose. Rather to create an atmosphere of lawlessness and insecurity – the two vital issues Nitish Kumar have handled very efficiently – is the prime motive. Linking six-seven months old intelligence report to the current blasts is also a wild conjecture, which creates an opinion that the plot was hatched well before the current political breakup.

The use of crude bombs shows the small players acted on behalf of their local masters. This means fewer casualties and more publicity to vitiate the peaceful environment. Unfortunately, we, as in many cases before, will never be able to see the behind-the-curtain masters even if small players are prosecuted. Bomb blast, like the divide and rule policy of the erstwhile British Raj, in many instances has been an excuse to corner a government, sideline a community, create a global order and divide people to garner votes. And like the US, the BJP, a party in search of an issue badly, has been busy in creating a monster. Muslims, via IM, is the monster for the public that they have to defeat by voting for the BJP.

No doubt, Bihar is simmering on the political turf. And the able Nitish Kumar seems vulnerable. He faces tough time. He has to silence his opponents. He has to maintain the law and order. Right now the biggest challenge for him is to contain the divisive forces ready to spread their tentacles in order to create general disturbance in the state. The CM has to deal with a party whose dictum is: ‘either your are with us or against us’. Nitish Kumar has had much of the bonhomie, now is the time to face the music. Winter will certainly be hot if the CM fails to nip the villains in the bud.

Apart from condemnation of bomb blasts, let there be a fair investigation. The perpetrators must be handed over the maximum punishment. But there is a request: no L K Advani or Rajnath Singh should stand up in support if any Assemanand or Sadhvi is named, or no Mohan Bhagwat should announce that Hindu cannot be a terrorist if a Hindu is chargesheeted.

The Medical Benefits of Taraweeh Prayers

Muslims perform five daily contact prayers (Salaat) and voluntary prayers (Sunnah, Nafl) throughout the year and Taraweeh prayers during the month of Ramadan. This results in moderate physical exercise particularly to every muscle in the body.

By Ibrahim B. Syed

Muslims derive therapeutic and spiritual benefits starting from the Wudu to the physical movements in the Salaat - Takbir, Qiyam, Ruku, Sajda, Jalsa, and Tasleems. Muslims perform five daily contact prayers (Salaat) and voluntary prayers (Sunnah, Nafl) throughout the year and Taraweeh prayers during the month of Ramadan. This results in moderate physical exercise particularly to every muscle in the body. Some muscles contract isometrically (same length) and some contract in approximation or isotonically (same tension). The energy needed for the muscle during exercise is met by a process known as glycogenolysis. The rate of muscle metabolism increases during the performance of Salaat, resulting in a relative deficiency of oxygen and muscle nutrients. In turn this deficiency causes vasodilation - an increase in the calibre of blood vessels - thereby allowing blood to flow easily back to the heart. The temporarily increased load on the heart acts to strengthen the heart muscle and to improve the circulation within the heart muscle.

During the month of Ramadan, additional prayers are performed after Salaatul Ishaa, called Taraweeh prayers which vary from 8 rakat (unit of prayer) to 20 rakat with a few minutes break after every 4 rakat for chanting and extolling the Majesty of Allah. After Iftar (breaking of fast) the blood glucose level continues to rise from the food ingested. Just before the Iftar meals, the blood glucose and insulin levels are at their lowest level. After an hour or so after the Iftar meal, the blood glucose begins to rise and also plasma insulin. Liver and the muscles take up the circulating glucose. The blood sugar reaches high levels in an hour or two and the benefits of Taraweeh prayers come into effect. The circulating glucose is metabolised into carbon dioxide and water during the Taraweeh prayers.

Hence the Taraweeh prayers help in expending the extra calories and improve flexibility, coordination, reduce stress-related autonomic responses in healthy persons, and relieve anxiety and depression.

Physical and Emotional Well-Being

The gentle exercises performed in Taraweeh prayers improve physical fitness, emotional well-being and increase the longevity of the Namazi (one who performs the Salaat or Namaz). When a little extra effort is made, as in performing the Taraweeh prayers, there will be a betterment in the endurance, stamina, in flexibility and strength. It was noted that the five daily prayers (Salaat) produce the same physiological changes without any undesirable side effects as those produced by jogging or walking at about three miles per hour. Recent research studies performed on 17,000 Harvard alumni who entered college between 1916-1950 give strong evidence that only moderate aerobic exercise, equivalent to jogging about 3 miles a day, promotes good health and may actually add years to life. Men who expended about 2000 kcal of energy on a weekly basis (equal to a daily 30-minute walk, run, cycle, swim, etc.,) had one-quarter to one-third lower death rates than classmates who did little or no exercise. In addition to the health-boosting qualities of the Salaat, the Namazi will be trained to be ever ready for any unexpected physical exertion such as sudden lifting of children, chairs, or catching a public transportation vehicle. The elderly will accomplish this more securely and efficiently. Hence this is an advantage for the elderly to maintain their physical fitness for a longer period of time. It has been observed that those who fast and perform the Taraweeh prayers report feeling much convalescing and robust.

The Elderly

As human beings grow older, their physiological activity diminishes, as a result their bones become thinner and if not taken care of will suffer from osteoporosis (which causes the fractures of the bones when they fall in the elderly due to a loss of bone mineral content and consequent sponginess of the bones. The bone then becomes structurally unstable, brittle and susceptible to fractures). Primary osteoporosis is most common among postmenopausal (due to reduction in oestrogen) women or those who have undergone a bilateral oophorectomy (both the ovaries removed). Women are six times more likely than men to develop Type I osteoporosis. The three major prevention strategies of osteoporosis are a high dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, regular exercise and oestrogen replacement in postmenopausal women. The skin also becomes fragile and crinkled. The repair processes of the body become slower and immune responses are decreased. In the elderly their physical activity is reduced as a result they have lower levels of Insulin Growth Factor 1. Reserve functions of all vital organs decrease and the elderly are more susceptible to mishaps and ailments. Because of repeated and regular movements of the body during Salaat the muscle strength, tendon power, joint flexibility and the cardiovascular reserve are improved. Hence Salaat and Taraweeh prayers enable the elderly to enrich the quality of life and to meet with unforeseen difficulties such as falls which could injure their bodies. Therefore Taraweeh prayers will improve their endurance, self-respect and self-confidence in being self-reliant.

Adrenaline is secreted even by minor activity. The secretion outlasts the incitement. Even after the Taraweeh prayers are over the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline are manifest. (Adrenaline also called epinephrine is produced by the adrenal glands. The middle part of these glands, the adrenal medulla, secretes the hormone, which is chemically almost identical to the transmitter substance noradrenaline produced at the ends of sympathetic nerves. Adrenaline secretion into the bloodstream in stress causes acceleration of the heart, constriction of arterioles, and dilation of the pupils. In addition, adrenaline produces a marked increase in metabolic rate thus preparing the body for emergency.) Even the thought or the intention of performing the Taraweeh prayers is sufficient to activate the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous system (thoraco-lumbar nervous system) is one of the two division of the autonomic nervous system, which supplies motor nerves to the smooth muscles of internal organs and to the heart muscle. Sympathetic nerve fibres arise via spinal nerves in the thoracic and lumbar regions. Their endings release mainly adrenaline, which increases heart rate and breathing rate, raises blood pressure, and slows digestive processes, thereby preparing the body for "fight or flight" and antagonising the effects of the sympathetic nervous system. The adrenaline would redistribute the blood in the body to the active muscles, would mobilise liver glycogen if necessary in order to provide glucose for the active tissues, would diminish fatigue in skeletal muscles and would facilitate alveolar ventilation relaxing bronchiolar muscle, and would initiate cardiovascular changes. Exercise induces a more effective functioning of beta-adrenoreceptors located on cell membranes.

Beneficial effects of Gentle Exercise

The Taraweeh prayer is considered to be gentle exercise. The beneficial effects of gentle exercise on the body are many which are elaborated here.

Effects on Skeletal Muscle

Once muscles atrophy inspite of the availability of ample proteins. During the Salaat and Taraweeh, every muscle in the body contracts isotnically and others isometrically. This gentle exercise also enhances endurance and diminishes tiredness. It helps the incapacitated to make the most of their remnant capabilities. The blood flow in strung muscle is low. During the prayers the blood flow is greatly increased to the muscles. Blood flow sometimes increases even before the start of Taraweeh prayers, with just the thought of performing the Taraweeh prayers. In addition to needing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, the human body requires minerals such as Potassium for nerve and muscle activity. It is found in fruits, meats, seafood and milk. Potassium deficiency leads to muscular and neurologic disorders. Potassium is also important in the transmission of nerve impulses and is a major positive ion in intracellular fluids. Potassium is involved in cellular enzyme activities, and it helps regulate the chemical reactions by which carbohydrates is converted to energy and amino acids are converted to protein. Also Potassium ions cause vasodilation of arterioles. During the Taraweeh prayers, systolic Blood pressure may rise (the larger number in B.P.) a little and the diastolic Blood Pressure(the lower number in B.P.) may remain unchanged or even fall. However after the Taraweeh prayers are over, the B.P. may drop to just below normal levels which is a welcome sign. Taraweeh prayers improve respiratory efficiency; circulation in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli, or air sacs, is increased, and this brings about enhanced gas exchange and deeper breathing. The increase in the maximal consumption of oxygen is what makes the Namazi feel better. Those who perform the Taraweeh prayers, apart from the prescribed Salaat, are more alert and active than those who do not perform the Taraweeh prayers, even after the age of retirement. Taraweeh prayers improve physical strength and joint stability and reduce the risk of injury to the tendons and connective tissues. After age 40, the bone mineral density falls with age. Taraweeh prayers increase bone mineral density in both menopausal and in elderly women and prevents osteoporosis and maintains normalcy in bone structures. Osteoporosis results in hip fractures in women after menopause and in elderly men. The risk of osteoporosis is substantially reduced by regular Salaat and Taraweeh prayers. The prayers improve lubrication of joints, movement, and maintain flexibility. Deep vein thrombosis (the most common cause of ulceration of the legs in the elderly) is prevented by performing Salaat and Taraweeh prayers.

Metabolic Effects

Salaat improves body weight control and expend calories without proportionate increase in appetite. A combination of moderate dietary restriction, both at the Iftar and Sahur (early morning breakfast before the start of fast) meals, accompanied by the Taraweeh prayers, should achieve weight reduction. This will also reduce both fat and body weight, but fat-free weight will remain constant or may even increase slightly. Hence during Ramadan one should not overeat at the Sahur and Iftar meals and continue to perform Salaat and Taraweeh prayers in order to lose some of the excess weight.

It is well known that exercise prevents coronary heart disease (CHD), increases high density lipo-proteins (HDL or healthy Cholesterol), increases maximum oxygen uptake, slows the heart, lowers the B.P. slightly, decreases ventricular ectopic activity, enlarges the lumen of the coronary arteries and increases cardiac output. Exercise also improves carbohydrate tolerance and improves late-onset diabetes, and helps cases of chronic respiratory diseases. Beneficial changes have been recorded in the lipid profile, B.P., clotting factors, weight reduction and insulin sensitivity of muscles and other tissues in persons who exercise regularly. Growth Hormone secretion is elevated by fasting and it is further elevated by Taraweeh prayers. As Growth Hormone is necessary for collagen formation, this may be an important factor as to why the skin of those who fast regularly during Ramadan and perform the Taraweeh prayers do not get wrinkled, even when they grow old.

Mental Health

It is a known fact that exercise improves mood, thought and behaviour. Exercise improves the quality of life, induces greater sense of well-being and energy, reduces anxiety and depression, influences mood favourably and contributes to self-esteem and an aura of confidence; improves memory in the elderly especially with constant repetition of the Ayaat (verses) from the Glorious Quran and other Ayaat which exalt His Glory. This constant repetition of the Quranic Ayaat would help to screen the mind from the incoming thoughts. It has been found by a Harvard University researcher, Dr. Herbert Benson that repetition of a prayer, Ayaat of the Quran or remembrance (Dhikr) of Allah or muscular activity coupled with passive disregard of intensive thoughts causes a "relaxation response" that leads to the lowering of Blood Pressure and decreases in oxygen consumption and a reduction in heart and respiratory rates. All these are combined in the Taraweeh prayer which is an ideal condition for "relaxation response." It combines repeated muscular activity with repetition of Salaat, chanting of words of glorification of Allah and of supplications. The Taraweeh prayer puts the mind in a relaxed state. This calm state of the mind may be partly due to the release of encephalins, beta-endorphins (endogenous morphines) and others into the blood circulation. Endorphins are any one of the neuropeptides composed of many amino acids, elaborated by the pituitary gland and acting on the central and peripheral nervous systems to reduce pain. Endorphins are categorised as alpha-endorphin, beta-endorphin, and gamma-endorphin which produce pharmacologic effects similar to morphine. Beta-endorphin found in the brain and GI(gastro-intestinal) tract is the most potent of the endorphins and is a powerful analgesic(pain killer) in humans and animals. For example during childbirth many women release endorphins reducing a woman's sensation of pain. The release of endorphins is associated with an euphoria. During childbirth, women who give birth with little or no medication sometimes label this euphoria a "birth climax."

Conclusion

Islam is the only religion where physical movements of Salaat and Taraweeh prayers are combined with spiritual exercise. When Salaat and Taraweeh prayers are practiced throughout a person's life, recurring every few hours or so, trains a person to undertake the difficult task of meditation during physical manoeuvres of Salaat and Taraweeh prayers, so that the Namazi(one who performs theSalaat) benefits both from spiritual as well as physical exercise. Salaat and Taraweeh prayers are unique in that tension builds up in the muscles during physical manoeuvres on the one hand, while tension is relieved in the mind due to the spiritual ingredient, on the other hand. The following benefits have been noted among those who perform the Taraweeh prayers: burning off calories and losing weight, maintaining muscle tone and body composition, joint flexibility (stiff joints are often the result of disuse, not arthritis), increasing metabolic rate, improving circulation, improving heart and lung function and aerobic capacity, decreasing heart disease risk profile, increasing your sense of self-control, reducing your level of stress, increasing your ability to concentrate, improving your appearance, reducing depression and resistance to depression, helping you sleep better and suppressing your appetite. Evidence is also accumulating that those who perform regular Salaat along with voluntary prayers can conserve and actually retard the loss of bone mass in the elderly, thus staving off the ravages of osteoporosis that afflicts both men and women. It is also possible to retard the aging process and confer some protection to health in later life. Those who have performed Salaat (Fard and Wajib), Sunnah and Nafl and Taraweeh prayers throughout life get protection and a positive effect in terms of health and longevity. They reverse the life-shortening effects of cigarette smoking and excess body weight. Even people with high blood pressure (a primary heart disease risk) reduced their death rate by one-half and their risk of dying from any of the major diseases is reduced. They also counter genetic tendencies toward an early death.

Hence Salaat (Fard, Wajib), Sunnah, Nafl and Taraweeh prayers are necessary for Muslims to preserve life and their desirable qualities into old age.
